EsRadio Aragón is a radio station that is part of the Libertad Digital group.
Our group has its origins in 2000, when Libertaddigital.com was born as a refuge for ideas and intellectuals who wanted to guarantee the existence of a safe harbor from which to disseminate them, regardless of the interests of companies owned by third parties. In fact, the choice of the launch date, March 8, was a personal effort by Federico Jiménez Losantos, determined "that we appear a few days before the elections that were going to give Aznar the absolute majority, to symbolically accentuate the independence from the political power of our environment".
A few years earlier, the same group that would launch Libertad Digital had begun to launch La Illustration Liberal, a quarterly magazine of thought whose first issue finally appeared in early 1999 and which is still alive, although now exclusively online and as part of the Club of Digital Freedom. With it they aspired to bring together a group of authors willing to develop a liberal critical discourse, alternative to the progressive one that they considered dominant and even hegemonic in the media.
At the end of that same year, they undertook a project of greater ambition, as similar as possible to a national newspaper for those who had the necessary means for a quality weekly paper. A project "whose declared goal was to defend the cause of Spain and freedom, for us only one." The Internet was already mature enough to be used as an effective and low-cost means of dissemination, so they thought of using it to disseminate an "opinion newspaper", that is, a medium with clear principles from the editorial point of view.
Subsequent projects took us to the audiovisual world, complicated places that also had to be conquered with liberal ideas despite the marked political interventionism. In 2005 we developed a television project obtaining local DTT broadcasting licenses in Madrid, Murcia and Valencia. With almost twenty self-produced programs, Libertad Digital Televisión demonstrated the path that still remains to be followed to achieve authentic political plurality in privately owned media. Our product had high demand and great quality, but state intervention made competition and access to the always necessary advertising impossible. Despite the austerity of our economy, the DTT television business was only a good idea for a few. However, the human and technical structure of Libertad Digital Televisión allowed us to create a competitive audiovisual content production company with its own media and spaces in the center of Madrid: Cronos Multimedia.
In 2009 the radio adventure arrived. On September 7, at 7 in the morning, esRadio was born, the result of the development of an FM license in Madrid. The station was launched in just three months, two of them in the summer, and today it is the fourth general commercial channel in Spain with 600,000 daily listeners and an important influence on political life. With the founding principles of Digital Freedom intact, esRadio has managed to establish itself as the clearly liberal speaker that until then did not exist. Even so, being a regulated and heavily intervened market, the battle to be present in regions such as Catalonia or the Basque Country – and until recently, Andalusia – is daily and fierce.
At EsRadio Aragón, we share these values and founding principles. We work to be a benchmark for informational independence and political plurality in Aragon. We strive every day to offer our listeners quality content and a space where liberal ideas can be expressed freely, without the constraints of external interests. With the support of the LIBERTAD DIGITAL group, we continue forward with the same determination and commitment that have characterized our history, addressing each challenge as an opportunity to grow and consolidate our multimedia project.
